BACKGROUND: The war started very quickly. The majority of
NATO forces in the GIUK gap (STANAVFORLANT) were immediately
committed to barrier operations across the gap. Efforts of
the Soviet Northern Fleet consisted of: infiltrating
submarines into the North Atlantic, amphibious operations
off the Norwegian coast, and bastion defense.

Unfortunately for the admirals, the units and types of units
were not always available to implement grand strategy.

BLUE ORDERS: A Soviet Surface Action Group (SAG) has been
reported inside the GIUK barrier. Task Group 23.53 (TG
20.53) shall cease ASW operations. Intercept and engage the
SAG before it enters the Atlantic or reaches the sea-lanes
running between the Faeroes Islands and the Scottish coast.

INTELLIGENCE: The SAG is exiting the Norwegian Sea
Northwest of the Faeroes Islands and was last reported
heading southwest through the Icelandic/Faeroes strait.

One K-class CG with one, possibly two escorts have been
reported.

MINIMUM VICTORY: Destroy one large combatant and
substantially damage (< 50%) another surface combatant.

RED ORDERS: Proceed into the North Atlantic and begin
commerce raiding. Inflict the maximum possible damage on
traffic. In addition, attempt to draw-off NATO surface,
air, and submarine units from ASW operations in the
Iceland/UK gap.

INTELLIGENCE: One NATO ASW TG consisting of one CG with
one, or two escorts is operating in the Iceland/Faeroes
strait. One or two NATO submarines are also reported
operating in the strait. Aircraft activity is light and
restricted to ASW operations.

MINIMUM VICTORY: Transit two combatants through the
Icelandic/Faeroes strait to a position South of 65 degrees
latitude.
